CHANIA - CRETE - GREECE
Chania
is the perfect combination of mountains and the sea.
It
is one of the most beautiful cities of the island, and from the viewpoint of many,
perhaps the most stylish. Moreover, Chania is a good starting point to explore
other Crete sights, especially on the island's western part.
The
Minoan settlement, originally known as Kydonia, Chania was ruled in turn by the
Romans, the Byzantines, the Venetians, thed Genoese, the Turks and the Egyptians.
After attaching to Greece in 1913, the island was invaded by the Germans in 1941
and the old city was destroyed. As an aside, Cretans do not like to be given the
Greek identity. They simply consider themselves as Cretans. Moreover, they consider
themselves different from the Greek people by their traditional clothes, their
habits and the cuisine. The city's troubled past is suggested by the strengthened
Venetian fortifications that are still there today.
The
town has developed around the port. In the north-west is the most interesting
area, namely the old Venetian town where summer evenings are organized by traditional
dances and theater plays.
Janissary
Mosque, located on the other side of the outer harbor, was built along with the
arrival of Turks in Crete, around 1645, and it is the oldest Ottoman building
on the island. Walking away from the mosque tourists may discover the oldest part
of the town, namely the Kastelli quarter, where they can see the ruins of the
Kydonia, the Minoan Castle.
The
city's streets are very picturesque.
It is a pleasure to walk on these crazy cobblestone streets with old houses with
wooden balconies, hundreds of years old, to walk through places that were once
concuered by the Romans, the Venetians, the Genoese, the Turks and Egyptians alike
.... streets that were given so many pages of history, many untold, unknown, unread.
Chania
offers the best accommodation in Crete. The city is absolutely charming. From
here you can get to Elafonissi in an hour, in 30 minutes you can get to the extreme
western Crete, or in 20 minutes you can get to Rethymno. If you choose Crete as
your holiday destination, Chania is an essential point in your itinerary, without
which you don't understand much of Crete.
Quick
useful information
Crete
is much more than an island, it is a micro continent. There are few places in
the world where you can find such a vast array of cultural influences within such
a relatively small geographical area. The area is also blessed with an amazing
variety of terrain which contributes both to the wealth of fresh local agricultural
products available as well as the wide range of outdoor activities that can be
enjoyed here.
