HERSONISSOS TRADITIONAL FOOD - CRETE - GREECE

Greeks cook with olive oil, and their favorite meat is grilled sheep. Greek appetizer contains tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelons, slices of cheese, olives and various fruit. Among traditional dishes include appetizers, mezedes composed of melitzanosalata - chopped eggplant with oil, lemon and garlic, taramosalata - egg pasta and dolmadakia - vine leaves stuffed with meat or rice).

The main course is casseroles, pot roast meat or fish, including skewers of lamb or pork - souvlaki. Fish and shellfish are excellent; horiatiki - Greek salad served with main course consisted of slices of tomatoes and cucumbers, olives and Fett. For dessert greeks usually have baklava and cataif. Cretan specialties are cheese Graviera (yellow) and mizithra - white cheese, cream, often served instead of Fett in Greek salad.
Their favorite appetizer is ouzo and retsina of wine. The best wines are the ones made at home and found in local taverns. Raki is the local preffered alchool, flavored with anise, also known as the tsikoudo, served either plain or with ice and water.

Starters

• Tzatziki (probably the most famous Greek dish, prepared with yogurt, garlic and cucumber);
• Tyropithakia (a kind of pie filled with Feta, traditional cheese);
• Numbulo (a kind of ham that can be found only on the island and it is made from smoked pork);
• Buduni (pork sausage, fried and served sliced with a glass of wine).

Salads

• Horiatiki - famous Greek salad which is prepared with tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, peppers, Feta cheese, black olives and olive oil.

Meat

• souvlaki (skewers of chicken or pork wrapped in thin slices of ham);
• Stifado (veal cooked with onions and tomato sauce);
• Giouvetsi (lamb with rice);
• Bifteki (large patty stuffed with cheese, onion and pepper and then grilled);
• Mousakas (minced meat, layers of potatoes, eggplant and cream);
• sofrito (veal cooked in wine sauce);
• Pastitsada (veal or chicken cooked with fresh tomatoes, cinnamon, wine, onions and various spices).

Fish

• Bourdeto (spicy fish soup made with hot peppers, onion, salt and olive oil);
• Bianco (different kinds of fish cooked with wine, lemon juice, garlic and vinegar);
• Enjoy (fried fish served with sauce of garlic, rosemary, vinegar and dried grapefruit).

Vegetables

• Imam eggplants (aubergines stuffed with onions and tomatoes, baked in oven).

Fast food

• Gyros - a sandwich with chicken or fried pork, fries, onion rings, slices of fresh tomatoes and tzatziki, wrapped in a pita.
